Issue 18 Letter from the Editor: When Museum Education Meets Legislation

The Editorial Team at Viewfinder takes great pride in our current Issue 18, which delves into the influence of legislation on museum education and the notable beneficial developments that have emerged in the programming included in this issue's articles. Authors Jasmine Krueger, Olivia Spiers, Molly Phillips, Danielle Muzina, and Candice Duncan-Baune  provide an opportunity for educators to address the consequences that legislation may have in their own states by fostering dialogue among educators and their audiences. The programs and approaches outlined in Issue 18 have successfully addressed the issues experienced and raise the question: Can the accomplishments of these programs catalyze profound transformations in the field?"

Editors Daniela Fifi, Ed.D, Kelly McKay, Ph.D, Callie Smith, Ph.D, and Alison Heney, Ph.D

Artivism Week at MOLAA: Self-expression and Protest!

Yesterday at MOLAA, Summer Camp students surprised museum guests by quietly staging a “sit-in” inspired by our work during “Artivism Week.” Crafted with hand-made signs and larger-than-life puppets, this event joined together thirty-seven students ages 6 to 17 to show how art can communicate important social messages - even in the absence of words. We are so proud of each and every one of our campers for their thoughtfulness, creativity, and bravery. @nightowlstudio @juancarlosperez927 @goblin_market #EducationwithMOLAA #learnwithmolaa

Artivism is the fusion of "Art" and "Activism.” This dynamic form of art can communicate ideas and challenge stereotypes through mediums like graphic design, performances, and music. This program empowers students to use art and creativity as a tool for change by exploring examples of "artivism" in social movements such as Environmentalism, Body Positivity and Accessibility.

Community Week at MOLAA: Murals and Printmaking!

Community and Public Art Week: Monday, July 18 – Friday, July 22, 2022

Semana de la Communidad y el Arte Publico: Lunes, 18 de julio a viernes, 22 de julio, 2022 Funding by the Josephine Gumbiner Foundation and @genesisinspirationfoundation

Public art has served as an agent for the representation of communities and development of identity in urban spaces. Engaging collaborative activities such as mural making, dance, and music, provide a collective space for the exchange of ideas and elevating the voices of individuals. The program this week aimed to inspire underserved youth to work together for a common goal and promote messages of diversity, inclusion, and equity in both the museum and within their own communities.
